Looking Ahead

Following its highly successful launch last year, I am writing to tell you about an orchestral course this summer that may be of interest to your members. The Sinfonia, run by violinist and conductor Oliver Nelson, is part of the world-renowned Sherborne Summer School of Music (https://heyzine.com/flip-book/273bbd372c.html#page/3) and takes place in Dorset between 28th July and 4th August, 2024.

The course welcomes a wide range of standards for orchestral instrumentalists from Grade 5 upwards, suiting both the experienced amateur and late learner. As the attached flyer shows, the repertoire is rich and varied, including Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Smetana's Three Dances from the Bartered Bride and Dvorak's 8th Symphony.

Aside from rehearsals and an informal concert towards the end of the course, there is leisure time in which members can opt to form chamber music groups, attend professional recitals and concerts from other courses, or go for a swim, socialise and explore the historic medieval town.

I do hope that this will be of interest and I would be very grateful if you would distribute this email and the flyer below to your members.

Wishing you a wonderful 2024,

Hi Everyone, just to say that even though we were a bit 'thin on the ground' (for so many different but legitimate reassons!) I thought you all played extremely well and thank you to those who stepped up and played parts for those who were unable to come. I was very pleased with the way the 'Dance of the Comedians' is coming along - those Gb's at fig.12 have been nailed (almost)! I would also like to thank David (principal 2nd violin) because he let me know that he was poorly so I was able to bring my violin and rearrange the way I took the rehearsal. Very helpful.

I thought I'd just confirm what we will be playing in the concert on Monday 12th December and also the rehearsal dates.

We have 2 weeks off for half term so we start back on:

Mon 7th Nov

Mon 14th Nov

Mon 21st Nov

Mon 28th Nov

Mon 5th Dec

Mon 12th Dec Concert

This gives us plenty of time to concentrate on the pieces. I have decided to concentrate on 2 pieces for string ensemble and 2 pieces for orchestra and we will rehearse both each week. I may just run through Cinderella on occasion even though we will not perform this. We will also NOT be doing 'Fingals Cave' which is a tad difficult at the moment.

Strings:

Serenade in D Minor FIRST MOVEMENT *- Julius von Beliczay

Sinfonia in G Major - Albinoni

Orchestra:

Humoreske-Dvorak

Dance of the Comedians - Smetana

* I will do an easier version of some of the bars for first and second violins (eg. bar101 2nd vln)

Don't forget to look at the WOW sheet and maybe look at a cheat way of coping with a difficult bar or two! (17/10/22)

Enjoy your break and see you on 7th November.

Love Julie x
